Have you ever stopped to think about a world without words? A world where the spoken and written language ceased to exist? It might sound like the start of a bad science fiction movie, but let's take a moment to consider it.
Now, imagine if NASA was unable to communicate with its astronauts in space due to a worldwide language ban. Their missions would be cut short; scientific progress stalled and their dreams of exploring the unknown unfulfilled. A world without words could see our own progress shut down entirely.
But let's take a further look. A world without words could very well breed a world without conflict. How do you fight without being able to taunt? How can you argue when the spoken word is no longer an option? We would be, essentially, the equivalent of social media trolls without the keyboard or touchscreen. Would disagreements be fewer? Would we judge less without the ability to launch verbal assaults? Perhaps.
But if words were banned, what would take their place? Emojis, perhaps? At least with a smiley face, crossed fingers, and a heart emoji, you can express basic emotions. But could emojis ever truly convey the complexity of language? For example, would we ever have Shakespeare-emojis?
And of course, with a language ban, our entire education system would have to change. No longer would students need to conjugate verbs, participate in linguistics classes, or learn the subtle nuances of polite conversation. Instead, we could focus on visual expressions, use sign language and, of course, master the art of miming.
But ultimately, would we be any better off for it?
Perhaps the answer lies far beyond our world. After all, the universe we live in is vast, with all sorts of creatures communicating in ways we cannot imagine. What if, one day, we met beings from another planet with vastly different ways of communication? Would our words be obsolete? Perhaps then, we would finally find common ground, and make peace through an entirely different kind of language - one we have yet to conceive.
Who knows where such a scenario would lead us - perhaps to starry-eyed wonder and boundless creativity, or perhaps to misunderstanding and chaos. But if our world did lack words, maybe someday we would have to learn an entirely different way to converse with beings both here and beyond the stars.
So, while a world without words seems a distant (and unlikely) possibility, it does make you think. What would we lose, and what would we gain? Perhaps one thing's for certain - in the end, we would always find a way to communicate. After all, as humans, we are the ultimate survivors.
